3. “Using VC on Mobile Devices” – Carol Teitelman, Coordinator of Distance Learning Programs, Region 13 ESC, Carol.Teitelman@esc13.txed.net

Mobile...Cubie buddy...doesn't have capability to zoom like vgo. Cubie easier....someone moves it instead of drive...price point is $400-$500. Down side of Cubie is need VC tool and controls open at same time. Leaning toward Cubie for MS and HS. Software tried Clearsea and Zoom. Works best with lots of class changes. Elementary vgo seems to work best. Kids personalize robot in classroom which seems to be important. Put thirst on it.

Presentation...simulation of what it's like to take a student virtually on a field trip. Virtual student becomes the recorder. Example is museum. Students at museum doing scavenger hunt. Virtual student note taker.

Question...where are we going to get Internet access? Pre choose spots and/or send mi-fi if and/or use a tablet with 3G

Apply to Alternative Ed. Settings, and science and math lab settings...affordability of sending small groups to a remote location for experiment or interaction.

3 hour workshop. 45 min. Ground work. Workshop participants go out to sites in field and share back to student. Using hospital students. Come back for debrief.

Include a chaperone

Meet at the door. flipped learning model, work with proctor

4. Upcoming Events – Next Session 3/6/14
Mandy Bryan: Snowman exchanges, content events HS connecting to CoSci, 8th quiz bowl, and other quiz bowls for essential skills.

Logitech webcam to laptops....and 25' VGA to support use if VC on laptop to alleviate end of head syndrome. Ndla conf. strand for non-profits to become content providers. How to sign up, write a lesson plan, VC overview, make engaging session

Lori Hamm-Neckar: Reading discovery with Barbara Bush in Jan., moved because of furlough, Jan 14

Audra May: Snowman exchange programs, gearing up for next semester. Back of head issue....kind of mandate camera needs to be near display

Amy Spath: Step out...put together cool. Projects that are going to open up statewide, the mitten elem. project. Prep for site. Holiday storytelling project missed.

2. Share success or challenge
Ken Conn: Challenge - VC from home and getting audio to work, USB headset seems to work in ClearSea, Skype audio seemed to be more flexible

Linda Dickeson: (2) Challenges = (1) new office building, vc not set-up in conference rooms yet, so have to vc from cubicles - (2) support through desktop vc for homebound students using scopia radvision client, have a point person to help get things set-up, started getting requests for students with behavior issues that need to be removed from classroom & need to get the process set-up for that scenario

Anne Herndon: Challenge: what’s next, been doing vc for 10 years, is it desktop?, a new format?, waiting for next wave

Mark Johnson: Challenge: getting teachers that have never done vc to try it, once they do it, love it & are repeat users - another challenge is replacing the equipment, looking at refurbished & getting donations for new units - Success: have already had (5) vc’s since September with people signing up for later in the school year, have some schools that are running on their own with very little direct assistance, a couple of schools still working with on getting to that level - Linda McDonald mentioned 123VC workshop, 123vc.pbworks.com, for professional development

Audra May: Success: making the ACVC session, been wanting to attend since learned about it last year - Challenge: grant for state network/bridge expired & everyone had to find their own network access, has pushed more responsibilities onto teachers as well

Linda McDonald: Challenge: training piece, Houston ISD not using their H.323 videoconferencing systems, so have decided not to purchase them any longer - excitement of exploring cloud services & mobile solutions

Carol Teitelman: Challenges: similar to others - folks running networks at member districts make changes over summer that cause issues where they were resolved or didn’t occur previously - Success: teachers who attended 123VC session were able to receive a loaner LifeSize unit to use - another success is using vgocom.com units for homebound students - Kip Robins at Region 6,
http://www.facebook.com/MorgansAngelsVGo
, ~$6,000 for wifi model (instead of 3/4G)

3. Discussion of Possible Focus Topics for 2013-2014
Ken Conn:
*what’s the next big thing?

*flipped & blended models and how VC fits in the picture

Linda Dickeson:
*VGo system

Anne Herndon:
*what’s next?
*mobile devices (teachers sending data, sending pics of class via text)

Mark Johnson: participating in Internet2 user group, continue to put together statewide collaborations, regional technology group has a content dollar bank with available funds based on student body size, gives access to content providers, minnesota historical society using handheld devices to get feedback
*how do you deal with funding content providers?

Audra May:
*mobile clients, VSX 7000 units are dying, planning to replace with mobile due to cost, Google Hangouts, Zoom,
http://zoom.us/, Vidyo

Linda McDonald:
*legal issues with VC services to homebound or students outside of general classroom, general ed. vs. special ed, teaching core content between campuses intra-district
*evaluating VC success
*working with Internet service providers, understanding firewall issues
*resources for accessing video conferencing equipment such as a loan from an ESC, funding options
*VGo (vgocom.com) units servicing students with medical issues

Carol Teitelman:
*using vc on mobile devices, what are people using, challenges (Carol can present in December as prep for TCEA)

2. Share success or challenge
Ken Conn, Data Projections - Challenge = getting to 123VC prep, Success = presenting at the USDLA conference in St. Louis with other DL leaders across the USA

Linda McDonald, Data Projections - Success/Challenge = great feedback from former 123VC workshop participant saying that years later it is still the best workshop they ever attended, still struggle with getting people to register - information at 123vc.pbworks.com

JoAnn Roe, ESC Region 11 - still seeing growth in registrations

Jennifer Oxenford, MAGPI - Challenge = timing, 1st acvc, have seen drop in vc registrations, looking for ideas to combat barriers (scheduling, standards connection)

3. Student Created Videoconference Content, Tonia Carriger, Director of Professional Development Services, CILC
Overview of KC3 Project, how to get involved, effects on learning & student engagement

KC3 started about 6 years ago, 12 schools 1st year, 80 at height of program, now experiencing a fall off, thinking about how to address

students looks at their community and determine what is unique to develop into a program (environment, economy, ethnic traditions)

some students partner with content providers to bring in another level of viability

support = walking teachers through some webinars to help with topics and staying focused

students research, present, process information - stress interactivity & engagement & interest (what keeps your interest)

projects do best when they have a champion (i.e. Tommy Bearden from TX)

30 - 45 minute session, narrow topic (i.e. rattle snake vs. desert)

during the testing, students do pieces of presentation for feedback (i.e. graphics, backgrounds, interactivity)

best projects are ingrained in the curriculum (i.e. senior project, replace research paper) & preservice teachers

some students come back to coach

middle & high schools only, did elementary in past, but was a little too much teacher driven, gifted & talented programs

half core subject classes & half non-core subject classes (i.e. FFA)

archives? not available for general public

thinking about adding a flipped component & doing a more public judging

how do we increase engagement? do more on how it actually integrates into curriculum

kick-off in fall

4. Upcoming Events
Ken Conn, Data Projections - 123VC

Linda McDonald, Data Projections - Administrator Academy

JoAnn Roe, ESC Region 11 - ISTE, 123VC

Jennifer Oxenford, MAGPI - Philidelphia Museum of Art - discount to MAGPI members, lots of good programming
